I’ve bitten the bullet and decided to join NaNoWriMo 2010 - that’s National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel from November 1 to November 30, 2010. I’ll try to post status updates here, but I may leave the blog dormant for a while. As it is, I’m just in the research and planning stage and I’m spending 3+ hours after work on the computer and can only manage a short blog post.
My working title is “Accidental Prophecy” and it is a working title. But I needed something. It’s about two girls who accidentally write a prophecy that they must fulfill. I think it will be great fun. I may be the only person to ever read it, but I need a challenge that I will strive to reach. I hope I finish this…

That was the Atlanta Braves’ slogan this year. It takes 11 wins in the post-season to win the World Series. Since this was Bobby Cox’s last year as manager, that’s what they needed to do for Bobby to go out on top. Unfortunately, they were only able to come up with one win - although all three losses were by one run each.
I remember the worst-to-first Braves. I remember all the World Series disappointments up to the 1995 win. I remember when the announcers joked that pitchers were upset when Bobby had his knees replaced because he could get out to the mound faster. I remember chanting “Bobby! Bobby! Bobby!” during one of his famous tirades at an umpire (it was late during a game where there would be a fireworks show - I think he was trying to get out early so he could get some rest before the show. Because, of course, he went too far and was tossed.)
I’ve stated in an earlier post about how I don’t watch baseball the way I once did. So I watched some this post-season. And I saw Bobby’s last game. I’m glad I did, although it felt weird not recognizing the Braves as they came up to bat. I saw McCann play with the MS Braves, but he was the only player I had ever watched before. My attention span made it hard to get through the game. “The Aviator” was playing on another channel, and I switched there during every commercial, sometimes missing a play or two because I didn’t turn back fast enough.
Although I didn’t watch much, I’m going to miss Bobby. He was a real character. I wish they could have made a stronger showing and gotten Bobby back to the World Series one last time. But at least he got that first ring. And we Braves fans will always thank him for that.

For someone who loves to sleep so much, I sure do suffer from insomnia a lot. Last night we went to bed around 9:45p because I wasn’t sure I could stay awake much longer and Mondays are “Castle” night. I fell asleep within 20 minutes of getting into bed (very, very rare for me). I woke up at 2am with a horrible headache. I didn’t want to wake up Robin, so I came to the den to try to go back to sleep. I took some Tylenol and Benadryl to cut the headache and hopefully knock myself out. Nope. I think I dozed off around 4:45a or 5a but my alarm went off at 6:15a. It is so loud I can hear it in the den. The headache was worse. Migraine level. I was nauseous and got dizzy any time I moved my head (going from reclined on couch to sitting to standing was horrendous), so I knew going to work this morning wasn’t a good idea. I e-mailed our senior attorney and HR director. My team leader’s wife had a baby on Sunday, so I knew he wouldn’t be in and didn’t want to bother him at the hospital. Little did I know, but my e-mails went into people’s trash boxes. So they didn’t get them. And the team leader called at 9a when I had gotten back into bed. I wasn’t asleep (I still haven’t gone back to sleep) but I didn’t feel like taking off my eye-black to face the sunlight and answer my phone. Even with more Benadryl and Tylenol, I never fell asleep. I started feeling a bit better, so I went to work around noon. Now I’m exhausted and have to be at work at 6a tomorrow before driving to Hattiesburg for two full days of court. I haven’t packed yet. My goal is to be in bed by 9:17p and asleep by 10p. I probably will achieve the “in bed” goal, but my guess (and I’m usually right) is that I won’t fall asleep until 12:30a to 1a. That’s what always happens when I am very tired and know I won’t be getting much sleep anyway. I’m a serious self-saboteur. Foos.

I have noticed something recently - chess and chess terms abound on television. Yesterday, one of the NFL commentators continually talked about “the chess game that is football.” Robin and my favorite TV show is “Castle.” Because of that show, we read “Heat Wave”, the “fictionalized” account of Castle’s association with the NYPD. “Castle’s” name in the book: “Rook.” And my favorite show is “Fringe.” Two of the main characters’ last name is “Bishop.” So tell me, is there a conspiracy in Hollywood to get us to play chess? Or is chess invoked anytime people want to allude to strategy or smarts?

Historically, Dean Koontz has been one of my favorite novelists. I started reading his books in middle school and read them pretty steadily over the next 5-7 years. His books have a comforting similarity. I think of these as the “Koontz trifecta”: 1) a male protagonist who is around 6′ tall, slim, but muscular, with a strong, masculine name (often monosyllabic like “Dom” or “Hatch”) who drinks Corona; 2) a brilliant female protagonist who is 5′4″ to 5′6″, petite, but busty; and 3) a dog - a golden retriever who either is supernatural or you suspect may be.
I haven’t read a Koontz book in a while. I picked up “False Memory” in the library a few weeks ago. I’m still working on it. The book started off very slowly, but now I’m excited to see what happens next. It’s been so long since I’ve read a Koontz book, I forgot they often have sticky beginnings, but just when you think you are going to put it down and not pick it up again, you are up until 3am. That hasn’t happened yet, but I just got to a part where you audibly gasp.
I checked out his website, and there are a lot of books I haven’t read. At one point in my life, I got 2 or 3 of his paperbacks for Christmas every year. Maybe I’ll add some to my list this year.

We got Civilization V this week. It is the newest in the line of our favorite computer games. We started playing Civ III right after we moved to Dallas and didn’t know anyone but each other. We would play for hours and hours, neglecting school work and house work (but we made sure we had plenty of pizza and “potatoes” on hand.) We had to buy new computers when Civ IV came out - our graphics cards made the leaders look like the Cheshire Cat: all teeth and eyes, no faces. Normally, we play against each other. And Civ V has a multi-player component. But the word on the interwebs is that the multi-player component is very bad. So we’ve been playing individually. Robin ran through the tutorial and then played the tutorial game. Then I played the tutorial game. It has the same feel as the earlier versions - not a lot of new things to learn, but definitely things to unlearn. I really like it. I haven’t finished a game yet (outside of the tutorial), but that’s not unusual for me. I’ll play until I don’t feel like I have a chance to win, and I’ll start another game. So far, the French are my favorites with the Americans closely behind. I’ll update if that changes.

I’ve got a reputation at work for loving to eat soup. Now, I have to admit, that soup is very frequently my food of choice at work lunches. It’s rarely heavy, generally not too carby, and Tumlet doesn’t have a problem with it (usually.) Today is a co-worker’s last day at work. So we took him out for lunch. Everyone was picking on me for looking at the menu before-hand because they all “knew” I was going to order soup. But we were going to an Italian place, so I didn’t think that soup was a given. Until I saw the lobster bisque. Foos! I have a weakness for bisque. So, of course, that’s what I ordered. And everyone laughed. But it stunk. Literally. Now, I did have a pretty vicious stomach issue last night (after I ate fried shrimp, French fries, hush puppies, and cole slaw - I swear I think it was the cole slaw!) so I’ve been feeling puny all day, but I could only take 3 or 4 bites of my soup. How disappointing! And at $6 a bowl, I feel cheated. Next time I’ll stick to a bland soup after I’ve been sick. Or try to kill my stomach with a heavy pasta. Then I’d just be asleep at my computer instead of nauseated.

It’s my last night in Biloxi with this job. I’ve had a lot of un-fun times down here, but today is the worst. I decided not to go with Robin to Michigan for his grandmother’s funeral. The plane ticket was very expensive, and I start my new job next Friday, so I decided it would be best to work out the last few days of this job. I’m really regretting it. The first time I met Mimi, she made me feel like I was another grandkid. She was so sweet and funny. I wish I would have gone to the funeral to celebrate her life. Her son is one of the most wonderful people I know and is an amazing testimony to his mother. This is not the best tribute to her life, but I hope she and the rest of the family know how much she meant to me. I’m signing off now because people are starting to stare - I’m at the computer in the lobby of the hotel, crying loudly, with mascara running down my face. I love you Mimi.

I usually don’t watch commercials. I love trailers before movies (if the trailers suck, the movie generally will as well), but I usually live by my TiVo and won’t watch TV in real time. But I’ve been traveling a lot. And when you stay in a hotel, you don’t have access to your TiVo. So I have found a new favorite commercial. You know the concept - a person moves to a neighborhood and roots for the wrong football team. My commercial is, of course, set in New Orleans. The main character is an older man talking about his punk neighbor who roots for the Atlanta Falcons. The commercial ends with the neighbor on the ground, holding his left arm, writhing in pain. Then it pans back to the main character, holding a voodoo doll with a pin in its left arm, saying, “But a dirty bird can’t fly with a broken wing.”
I’m thinking of getting that printed on black T-shirts with gold writing for me and the family.

I’ve always been up for a road trip. I guess I have gotten a wanderlust bug from somewhere in my family (Mama and Perry spring to mind). But I have to travel a lot for my job. In the past weeks, I checked into a hotel in Biloxi on Wednesday, checked out on Friday, checked back in on Sunday, and checked out again on Friday. Guess where I’ll be this coming up Wednesday?
I’ve decided I still like road trips - with Robin. I don’t like multiple overnights of travel without him. I don’t mind going away from him for a night here or there, but being gone for a week plus is just not fun. Fortunately/unfortunately, I won’t have this job come October 29. We lost our state contract and that will be my last day. I hope I find something else before then and that it does not require me to be gone so long. I want to get back to where someone says “Road Trip!” and I say “Sign me up!” instead of “To where and how long will I be gone?”
